Know your numbers. Manage your risk.
Lp(a), Apolipoprotein B, and hs-CRP
Knowing your levels of Lp(a), apolipoprotein B, and hs-CRP is critical for assessing your cardiovascular health. Lp(a) is a genetic risk factor for heart disease, and elevated levels increase the likelihood of atherosclerosis, which can lead to heart attacks or strokes. Apolipoprotein B is a key protein in LDL cholesterol, often referred to as "bad cholesterol," and its elevated levels can signify a higher risk of plaque buildup in the arteries. hs-CRP (high-sensitivity C-reactive protein) is a marker of inflammation in the body, with higher levels correlating with an increased risk of heart disease and stroke. By monitoring these markers, we can take proactive steps to lower cardiovascular risk through diet, lifestyle, and in some cases, medication.
B12 and Homocysteine
Vitamin B12 and homocysteine levels provide insight into your metabolic and cardiovascular health. B12 is essential for nerve function and red blood cell formation, and deficiencies can lead to fatigue, cognitive issues, and anemia. High homocysteine levels, on the other hand, are a known risk factor for heart disease and stroke. Elevated homocysteine can damage the lining of the arteries and increase the risk of blood clots. Maintaining optimal B12 levels is essential to those of us following a plant predominant dietary pattern.
A1c and HOMA-IR
Understanding your A1c and HOMA-IR (Homeostatic Model Assessment of Insulin Resistance) is vital for managing and preventing diabetes and prediabetes. A1c measures your average blood glucose levels over the past 3 months, giving a clear picture of long-term blood sugar control. Elevated A1c is a sign of prediabetes or diabetes, conditions that increase your risk for heart disease and stroke. HOMA-IR assesses insulin resistance, a precursor to type 2 diabetes. By understanding these numbers, we can take steps to improve insulin sensitivity and lower blood sugar through dietary interventions and lifestyle modifications.
Phytosterols and Cholesterol Absorption
Phytosterols are plant-based compounds that help block the absorption of cholesterol in the intestines. Measuring your phytosterol levels and understanding cholesterol absorption can provide important insights into your cholesterol metabolism and cardiovascular risk. Elevated cholesterol absorption increases the likelihood of plaque formation in the arteries, raising the risk of heart attacks and strokes. By including phytosterols in your diet and managing cholesterol levels, you can reduce your overall cardiovascular risk.
