Title: Bad habits can't exist in the light
"No way did I eat 8 times today!" It was 6pm and I was scrolling back through my time-line on an App that would change the way that I think about eating habits. I had eaten every 1-2 hours that I was awake! How could that be? I could not un-see it. If you had asked me at the time, before I started tracking, I would have told you that I had maybe 2 meals per day with a snack here or there. But there was the data, staring me in the face. And yes, even medical providers who know exactly what to do can gain weight... it all comes down to actually doing the thing. Actually putting knowledge into practice with consistency over time... that is how weight loss works.
What I have learned over the years is that my bad habits can't exist in the light. If I am truly honest about my tracking, that's when I make my biggest improvements. It's incredibly freeing to be so honest... but it is also incredibly vulnerable.
Leaning into shame. Shame makes us feel powerless. Like we have no control. Because we hide our shame. We keep it to ourselves. We're alone in it. Shame urges us to hide the parts of ourselves that we don't want anyone to see, so deep that even we can't see it. But what if there was another way...
What if we acknowledged our current habits and used this as a tool to foster social support. To lift one another up. To celebrate adding those vegetables to that calorie-dense meal... because it was a better option! Maybe not the best option, but better. And that's what matters. Progress. Not perfection. It all starts with having the courage to be vulnerable.
And that means something different for each one of us along the way. Vulnerability can look like building the courage to share actual photos of our meals with the group, or taking a photo of our dog when we can't bear to post the photo of the massive bowl of ice cream we're about to consume. Baby-steps and positive reinforcement for making changes and trying new things. That is what we do here at Lifestyle Medicine Maine.
