Title: Can we delay Menopause with diet and lifestyle changes
Do we have any control over when we start the menopausal transition? Epidemiological studies of twins and female relatives suggest that genes only explain about 50% of the age of menopause between relatives (1). What else effects when we get menopause and is there anything that we can do to postpone it?
To reduce our risk of early menopause, we can avoid polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH). PAH are thought to be toxic to the cells in our ovaries that store our eggs. Okay, but where do we find PAH and how can we avoid them?
Quit Smoking and Vaping. Smoke contains PAH. While Cigarette smoke contains substantially higher amount of PAH than vaping, both contain this chemical (3). Exposure to PAH can lead to menopause at an earlier age (2). This is further influenced by how young we started smoking and how heavily we smoked (2). Starting at a early age and smoking heavily would increase our chances of experiencing menopause at an earlier age (2). Food for thought if we are trying to delay the age that we plan to have children.
If you're looking to quit, Maine has a free hotline that you can call at 1-800-quit-now (1-800-784-8669). Here is a link to the website.
While diet has been suggested to play a role, there isn't a clear correlation between dietary choices and a significant change in when we experience the menopausal transition. When new information becomes available on this topic, I'll be sure to let you know here!
