The Rules of Pickleball: A Comprehensive Guide

Pickleball, a fun and fast-paced game that combines elements of tennis, badminton, and ping-pong, has been growing in popularity. Whether you’re new to the game or looking to brush up on the rules, this guide will help you understand how to play pickleball.

The Basics.

Pickleball is played on a court that is 20 feet wide and 44 feet long (half of a tennis court), divided by a net that stands 36 inches high at the sidelines and 34 inches high in the middle. The game can be played as singles (two players) or doubles (four players).

Equipment.

  • Paddle: Players use a paddle that is larger than a ping-pong paddle but smaller than a tennis racket. It is quite light weight.

  • Ball: The game is played with a plastic ball with holes, similar to a wiffle ball.

Starting the Game.

  • The game begins with a rally to determine which team will serve first.

  • The serving team stands behind the baseline and serves the ball diagonally to the opponent's service court.

  • The serve must be made underhand, and the paddle must contact the ball below the server’s waist.

The Serve.

  • The serve must land in the opposite diagonal court and clear the non-volley zone (the area within 7 feet on both sides of the net, also known as the "kitchen").

  • Only one serve attempt is allowed, except in the event of a let (the ball touches the net but lands in the correct service court).

The Double-Bounce Rule.

  • When the ball is served, the receiving team must let it bounce once before returning, and the serving team must also let it bounce once before returning the return of serve.

  • After these two bounces, the ball can be volleyed (hit in the air) or played off a bounce.

Scoring.

  • Points can only be scored by the serving team.

  • Games are typically played to 11 points, and a team must win by 2 points.

  • In tournament play, games may be played to 15 or 21 points.

Faults.

A fault occurs when:

  • The ball is hit out of bounds.

  • The ball does not clear the net.

  • The ball is volleyed from the non-volley zone.

  • The ball bounces twice before being struck by the opponent.

Non-Volley Zone ("The Kitchen").

  • Players cannot volley the ball while standing in the non-volley zone.

  • Players are allowed to enter the non-volley zone to play a ball that has bounced in The Kitchen.

  • A player cannot jump across the non-volley line to volley the ball.

Player Positioning.

  • In doubles, players on the serving team switch sides after scoring a point. The player on the right always serves first.

  • In singles, players serve from the right when their score is even and from the left when their score is odd.

Winning the Game.

  • The game is won when a team reaches the predetermined score (typically 11, 15, or 21) and is ahead by at least 2 points.

Pickleball is an engaging and accessible sport that’s easy to learn but challenging to master. With these rules in mind, we're ready to hit the court and enjoy the game. Our goal is to play for fun and have plenty of laughs along the way!
