When I moved from CT to the Augusta area of Maine, I learn a whole lot about Mainer's and Maine culture... but it wasn't until this past month that I discovered Renys.
When it comes to eating a healthy plant predominant dietary pattern, there is a common misconception that this will be expensive. And while it's true, on a calorie per dollar basis, whole plant foods are more expensive than Oreos... this doesn't hold up when we compare health outcomes per $ spent on groceries.
For example, the average retail cost of a statin medication like Lipitor (Atorvastatin) in Maine is $127.45 per month (source: GoodRx). That's $1,529.40 per year. Choosing whole plant foods over processed foods could not only lower our cholesterol naturally so that we no longer need the statin medication, but also reduce the chances of having a heart attack or stroke. Eating healthy foods is an option, and it doesn't need to break the bank.
So where does Renys factor into all of this? It turns out that Renys in Portland, ME offers plenty of affordable whole grain options of Bob's Red Mill products. Most of these options were less than five dollars! For the cost conscious, I recommend checking out Renys for intact whole grains and beans.
And they have organic salt-free BPA-free beans too! While I prefer to boil my own beans (they retain a bit more crunch), I have nothing against BPA-free low-salt canned beans. They're convenient!
If you are worried about finding ways to eat healthier foods on the cheap, then Renys is a great place to stop. Beans and intact whole grains are two of the healthiest and cheapest foods that we should be eating more of.
