Why your diet is failing you...

Article: Why your diet is failing you...

For most of us, we've been struggling for years to lose the weight and keep it off. We go on a diet, only to go off of that diet and rebound to our starting weight or maybe even more than that. I get it, the struggle is real! That's why Jessica Krol, FNP, DipACLM of Lifestyle Medicine Maine offers a different approach. A systems based approach.

Going on a diet, to later go off of a diet, predictably leads to regaining weight. Why? Because our current weight is simply a lagging measure of our day-to-day habits. When we work together, weight loss isn't the goal, it's the outcome. Let me explain...

late night snacking

Most of us look at dieting as something that we plan to grit out teeth through without thinking ahead to the skills that we are going to need to eat differently once we reach that weight. If we don't build new skills, then we will just fall back into our olds ways, making our "diet" all for nothing. Focusing on the outcome on the scale isn't actionable. Weight is not something that we have inherent control over, it's an outcome measure. What we do have control over is our consistency in what we choose to eat over time. Let me give us a few examples:

outcome measure: homework is done

action measure: actually sitting down to do the homework, getting rid of distractions, setting away intentional time to complete it and learning the material

outcome measure: riding a bike

action measure: getting on that bike, falling and getting back up, scraping our knees and not getting discouraged, taking off the training wheels, actually riding unassisted.

outcome measure: the weight on the scale

action measure: consistently tracking so that we know that we are eating 1-2 lbs of non-starchy veggies per day, swapping processed grains for intact whole grains, consolidating food eating occasions to 3 per day without snacks, choosing plant proteins, cutting back on added/refined fats, eating at home versus meals out, selecting meals that are calorically appropriate and leave us feeling full, and the list goes on!

What matters is focusing on skill building and consistency -- actually practicing eating differently and tracking this progress over time so that we can make informed decisions based on real measurable data. This leads to results that will last for a lifetime. Your diet is failing you because it's just that -- a short term "diet", not a new learned skill for a long-term change in dietary pattern.

Okay, but how long will it take for results? More on that tomorrow!
